Green Legacy Initiative Halting Environmental Degradation, Fostering Fruits Productivity in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, June 29, 2025 (ENA) -- The Green Legacy Initiative has been successfully halting environmental degradation in Ethiopia while simultaneously fostering significant improvements in fruit productivity throughout the nation, Chief Administrators of Regional States remarked.
The Chief Administrators also confirmed that their respective regions have made the necessary preparations for the success of this year's Green Legacy Program.
This year’s Green Legacy Initiative was launched in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Tagesse Chafo, Senior officials from Federal and Regional States as well as diplomatic corps.
The initiative, themed "Renewing through Planting," aims to plant 7.5 billion tree seedlings across the country this rainy season. Ethiopia aims to plant enough seedlings to bring the total to 47.5 billion.
Prime Minister Abiy together with the Nigerian Vice President and high-level Federal and Regional leadership undertook a tree-planting session on Saturday at the Gulele Riverside Project in Addis Ababa.
During the event, the chief Administrator who participated in the tree planting program articulated that the Green Legacy Initiative represents a national development strategy where citizens unite to transform Ethiopia through their collective efforts.
Oromia Regional State President Shimelis Abdisa noted that millions of residents in the region engage in the program annually.
He also highlighted that previously degraded areas within the region have been restored thanks to the Green Legacy Program, and that the potential for vegetable and fruit production has been created for both local and international markets.
Shimelis emphasized that this year, all necessary preparations have been finalized to enable the region's residents to participate extensively in the program.
The President of the Interim Administration of Tigray Region, Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede, remarked that the Green Legacy initiative has successfully fostered change by engaging numerous people across the country.
He highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the program, noting that it is set to officially launch this year’s Green Legacy initiative in the Tigray Region on July 20, 2017 EC.
Ashadli Hassan, the Head of Benishangul-Gumuz Region, stated that the Green Legacy Initiative has facilitated the growth of diverse fruit production throughout the nation.
He further emphasized that this program is enhancing Ethiopia's reputation for fruit exports alongside its well-known coffee industry.
The Green Legacy holds significant importance for the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, particularly as it is home to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
