AUC Pushing for Unified, Competitive & Sustainable Electricity Market across Continent

Addis Ababa, June 29, 2025 (ENA) – A High-Level Technical Meeting on the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) and the Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP) will be held in Addis Ababa on Monday with a view to pushing for  a unified, competitive, and sustainable electricity market across the continent.

The African Union Commission (AUC), through its Department of Infrastructure and Energy, organized the two day meeting that is expected to attract representatives from Member States, Regional Economic Communities, Regional Renewable Energy Centers of Excellence, and Regional Regulatory Agencies as well as development finance institutions such as the World Bank and Afreximbank among other key partners.

This key event marks the inauguration of the AfSEM High-Level Technical Oversight Committee, aimed at accelerating efforts toward a unified, competitive, and sustainable electricity market across Africa.

The meeting will convene key stakeholders to drive policy harmonization, mobilize investments, and define implementation roadmaps. The meeting will update Member States on progress and seek political support for the energy transition.

AfSEM represents a focused initiative designed to promote sustainable growth within the African electricity sector by establishing an integrated continental electricity market, as outlined in the 2019 AfCFTA Agreement.

AfSEM’s objective is to provide African households, businesses, and industries with energy that is more secure, sustainable, reliable, competitive, and affordable.

The Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP) is designed to address the electricity shortfall and facilitate an equitable distribution of affordable, dependable, and clean energy resources.

CMP brings more than 100 African stakeholders to rethink Africa's energy strategy and collaboratively develop solutions to combat energy poverty. The CMP serves as the blueprint for Africa's Green Vision, establishing a unified grid for the entire continent. c
