Green Legacy Program Crucial to Reviving Ethiopia's Economy, Says House Speaker

Addis Ababa, June 28, 2025 (ENA)— The Green Legacy Program is playing a crucial role in revitalizing Ethiopia's economy, as it is "closely aligned with the country's broader development agenda," according to Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives.

This morning, Speaker Tagesse, along with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other senior federal and regional officials, participated in a tree-planting ceremony at the Gulele Riverside Project.

During the event, Speaker Tagesse emphasized how deeply integrated the Green Legacy Initiative is with Ethiopia’s economic development strategy.

He emphasized that climate change directly impacts productivity, and therefore, the Green Legacy Program contributes to both environmental restoration and economic revival.

As a clear example of its positive economic impact, he cited improvements in coffee productivity since the program's launch.

Describing the initiative as a "generational endeavor," Tagesse urged all citizens to actively participate in building a resilient and prosperous Ethiopia.

He further stressed the importance of collective effort to achieve the nation’s aspirations swiftly.

Prime Minister Abiy officially launched this year’s Green Legacy Initiative yesterday, alongside Vice President Shettima, members of the diplomatic corps, and high-ranking government officials.

This year, the program has set an ambitious target of planting 7.5 billion tree seedlings.

The 2025 Green Legacy campaign is being conducted under the theme “Renewal Through Planting,” as Ethiopia aims to reach a cumulative total of 54 billion seedlings by next year.
