Standing Committee Emphasizes Need to Bolster Diaspora Engagement for Nat'l Development

Addis Ababa, June 28, 2025 (ENA)— Chairperson of the Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee of the House of People's Representatives Ambassador Dima Negewo stated that strengthening engagement with the diaspora is crucial for bolstering national development.  

The Ethiopian Diaspora Service (EDS) held a discussion forum in collaboration with the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs in Bishoftu town.

 Members of the parliament and other key stakeholders deliberated on strategies for strengthening diaspora involvement in the national affairs.

 Ambassador Dima Negewo, Chairperson of the Standing Committee underscored the need to intensify efforts by the Ethiopian diaspora to enhance their roles in the country's growth and prosperity.

 He noted that Ethiopia is actively working to fortify its relationship with its diaspora community, recognizing their immense potential to contribute to national development by mobilizing their skills, financial resources, and global networks.

 Ambassador Fitsum Arega, Director General of the Ethiopian Diaspora Service (EDS), on his part, emphasized the increased involvement of the diaspora, which has been encouraged by recent government reforms promoting peace and development. 

Despite diverse political views, he stated, the diaspora has consistently demonstrated commitment to the nation, especially during times of crisis.

 He recalled the significant financial support and medical supply donations provided by the diaspora community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 Ambassador Anteneh Tariku, Director of Engagement and Rights of EDS, also noted the untapped potential of over five million Ethiopians living abroad.

 "They contribute more than 5 billion US Dollars annually through remittances and serving as informal ambassadors for their country," he stated.

 He added that the Ethiopian Diaspora actively participates in various aspects of national life, including as economic investors, knowledge bearers, cultural ambassadors, and financial contributors through initiatives like the Diaspora Trust Fund and the "No More Movement".

 They also defend their country through groups such as the Alliance for GERD and the Ethio-Canadian Network for Advocacy and Support.

 Amin Jundi, Head of Diaspora Coordination at the Oromia Presidential Office, shed light on regional efforts to strengthen diaspora participation.

 "We have initiated programs that empower diaspora communities to support local development through assistance to schools and social service institutions," he explained.

 He further noted that diaspora-led investments are active across Oromia, including in Bishoftu, Jimma, Adama, and Sheger City, spanning sectors such as industry and services.

 Participating diaspora members also emphasized the necessity of such collaborative platforms in reinforcing their engagement in the country’s transformation.

 They also urged the government to sustain efforts to harness the experiences and capacities of influential diaspora groups worldwide to accelerate national progress.
