Nat'l Rehabilitation Commission Announces Reintegration of Over 60,000 Ex-Combatants

Addis Ababa, June, 24, 2025 (ENA)— More than 60,000 ex-combatants in four regional states have been successfully reintegrated into society, Ethiopia’s National Rehabilitation Commission (NRC) disclosed today.

Opening a three-day training of trainers (ToT) on reintegration, entrepreneurship, and job creation for ex-combatants, NRC Commissioner Temesgen Tilahun said ex-combatants rehabilitated live in Tigray, Afar, Oromia, and Amhara regions.

Out of the total ex-combatants, 48,000 were from Tigray region and the remaining more than 12,000 from Afar, Oromia, and Amhara regional states.

According to Temesgen, the commission is looking forward to successfully completing the first phase of the program in Tigray region within the next two months as 65 percent of the plan has been achieved.

Despite some challenges, the process has been productive so far, he stated, emphasizing the need for collaboration from all relevant stakeholders.

The commissioner urged partners and other pertinent stakeholders to further advance their continued support, especially financial support, which is crucial to realize the reintegration program.

Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Sweden in Ethiopia, Lohm Hedrig commended the constructive partnership between Ethiopia and Sweden, affirming that Sweden is proud to cooperate with Ethiopia in the reintegration process as well.

Sweden is providing direct financial support through the DDR process, technical cooperation and broader cooperation to peace building, and national recovery among others, she stated.

Hedrig also reiterated Sweden’s economic cooperation with Ethiopia, noting the significance of engaging and making the private sector play a positive role to create jobs and improve living conditions.

Recall that Ethiopia is actively engaged in a comprehensive demobilization and reintegration (DDR) program for ex-combatants, aiming to transition them back into civilian life.
