Ethiopia Will Continue Investing in Nat’l Evaluation Systems: Ministry of Planning & Dev't

Addis Ababa, June 18, 2025 (ENA)— The Government of Ethiopia will continue investing in national evaluation systems, building institutional capacities, and integrating evaluation frameworks into development programming and policy cycles, according to Ministry of Planning and Development.
Closing the AfrEA's 25th anniversary that has been observed for three days in Addis Ababa, Planning and Development State Minister Tirumar Abate reaffirmed Ethiopia’s strong commitment to promoting a culture of evidence-based policy and decision making.
“We believe that robust monitoring and evaluation systems are essential to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public service delivery.”
According to her, evaluation is no longer a luxury but a necessity in an era where resources are limited, expectations are high, and the cost of policy failure is immense.
To this end, the state minister added that the Government of Ethiopia will continue to invest in strengthening national evaluation systems, building institutional capacities, and integrating evaluation frameworks into development programming and policy cycles.
“We are actively working to institutionalize evaluation across ministries and the government agencies and ensure that lessons from implementation inform our development path.”
Tirumar further noted that Ethiopia remains deeply committed to the African Union Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing that these two frameworks embody collective aspirations for peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa.
The state minister commended AfrEA for aligning its vision and efforts with these global and continental agendas.
The Government of Ethiopia stands ready to support AfrEA in its future endeavors, whether through technical cooperation and institutional partnership, among others, she affirmed.
AfrEA President Miche Ouedraogo said for his part that the gathering has been instrumental not only to commemorate AfrEA’s 25th anniversary but to reaffirm the commitment to building a stronger and more resilient future for the continent’s evidence-based decision making and collaboration.
Similarly, Ethiopian Evaluation Association President Dereje Mamo stressed the need for translating evidence into policy that results uplifting millions, noting the significance of scaling up collaboration across the continent.
AfrEA's 25th anniversary was observed in Addis Ababa under the theme: “Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence in Africa-Rooted Evaluation: Building a Stronger Future Together.”
