PM Abiy Highlights Ethiopia’s Ongoing Push for Favorable Democratic Environment, Political Renewal

Addis Ababa, June 18, 2025 (ENA)—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underscored that, since 2018, Ethiopia has worked to foster a democratic environment—shifting from a long-standing posture of viewing parties as opposition to embracing them as legitimate competitors.

As part of his ongoing series of stakeholder consultations, the Prime Minister held discussions today with political parties to gather input on the various concerns they raise on behalf of their constituencies.

 

The Premier shared on social media pages that the decision to open up Ethiopia’s political space in 2018 was a pivotal decision in the country’s democratic journey.

“Since then, we have worked to foster a democratic environment, shifting from a long-standing posture of viewing parties as opposition to embracing them as legitimate competitors,” Prime Minister Abiy stated.

 He stated that this transformation is rooted in the belief that cultivating a culture of peaceful political contestation is essential for the country’s future.

 

 As part of this commitment, PM Abiy also noted that the government has maintained ongoing dialogue platforms with the numerous political parties registered by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia.

 “Once again, as part of a series of stakeholder consultations I have been conducting over the past week, today’s discussions continued with political parties to gather input on various concerns they raise on behalf of their constituencies,” he underscored.
