Ensuring, Protecting Nat’l Interest Foundation of Ethiopia’s Foreign Relations: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, June 7, 2025 (ENA)—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed noted that Ethiopia has implemented a much better and more advanced diplomatic approach by changing its foreign relations and diplomacy at policy level and tuning them to its national interests.
In a wide-ranging interview on the Ethiopian Television, the premier elaborated extensively on foreign relations and diplomacy.
According to him, Ethiopia is a vigilant and independent country that has created genuine friends, and welcomes friends from all continents.
For this purpose, we follow a diplomatic approach that is free from the bondage of ideology.
With regard to diplomatic agenda, Ethiopia has moved from receiving agenda to setting agenda on key issues, the PM pointed out.
Ethiopia is a country that persuasively presents its interests to international institutions, he said, adding that there is no reason to shy away from expressing them.
The nation’s diplomacy identifies friends, strengthens strategic partnership not only verbally, but through agreements; and it has as a result genuine strategic partners.
The PM noted Ethiopia has become a country that is needed in international mediations; and the country became a BRICS member due to our ability to explain the importance of the nation.
As we have won genuine friends in all continents, there are allies who are supporting us by exchanging information, training, and weapons, he elaborated.
During the past seven years, we have achieved a much better and advanced diplomacy that enabled us to continue ensuring our national interest, he affirmed.
As a result, we have won strong and reliable partners from the Middle East, Europe, Far East, and North America.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to reduce debt and dependence, increase the nation’s export to sustain our relationship with those friends and partners.
