Ethiopia, Slovenia Vow to Deepen Ties

Addis Ababa, June 4, 2025 (ENA)— Ethiopia and Slovenia held their third political consultation today with the view to deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two nations.

In his opening remarks, Foreign Affairs State Minister Hadera Abera highlighted the vast potential for cooperation between Ethiopia and Slovenia, emphasizing that the dialogue provides an excellent opportunity for enhancing mutual understanding, identifying new areas for collaboration, and formulating strategies to boost bilateral trade and investment.

The political consultation will review current engagements and explore new avenues for economic cooperation, he said, adding that the sectors of foreign direct investment, trade, education, and technology transfer — particularly in beekeeping, are prioritized areas in future engagements.

Ethiopia is among the fastest-growing economies globally and is pursuing rapid green and sustainable development, the state minister noted, mentioning that the government's comprehensive macroeconomic reform agenda offers significant investment opportunities.

“Most notably, service sectors that were previously closed to foreign investment such as telecom and finance have now been liberalized. The government has also been making substantial investments in infrastructure across the country. I believe this presents a promising avenue for Slovenian public and private sectors to engage and invest in Ethiopia.”

On the multilateral front, Hadera stated that Ethiopia and Slovenia share common views on various global issues, including sustainable development, migration, and combating terrorism. Therefore, strengthening cooperation is essential for advancing the national interests of the two countries.

On his part, Slovenia's Foreign Affairs State Secretary Marko Štucin pointed out that Ethiopia is an important partner in the region, and not only in the region but also in the global environment.

“Ethiopia and Slovenia are two friendly countries that share common commitments and common goals in the global world. We find Ethiopia an important partner in the region and not only in the region but also in the global environment.”

Slovenia's recent establishment of an embassy in Addis Ababa is a logical and right decision to enhance diplomatic engagement not only with Ethiopia but also with other African nations, Štucin noted.

The foreign affairs state secretary revealed that the upcoming visit of President Nataša Pirc Musar to Ethiopia is a significant commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including investment and trade.

Slovenia's President Natasa Pirc Musar is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa this evening for an official visit to Ethiopia.
