AUC Chairperson Expresses Deep Concern over Recent Armed Clashes in Tripoli

Addis Ababa, May 18, 2025 (ENA) -- The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep concern over the recent armed clashes in Tripoli, which resulted in loss of life and property damage.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission issued a statement of the on the situation in Libya.
In his statement, he welcomed the ceasefire and the return of cautious calm, while urging all parties to refrain from actions or statements that could further destabilize the fragile security situation.
Emphasizing the importance of demilitarizing the capital, Youssouf supported efforts to restore civilian order and uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in line with international law.
He called for national responsibility and engagement in a comprehensive political process to end Libya’s prolonged transitional phase and achieve lasting peace and development.
The Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s strong support for Libya and urged all stakeholders to commit to the National Reconciliation Charter, signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025.
