Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory Permanent Exhibition of How Reform Works, Says PM

Addis Ababa, May 9, 2025 (ENA) --- The achievement of Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory is a permanent exhibition of how reform works, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wrote on X today.
The factory, which was unable to pay wages three years ago and produced 1500 quintals, has boosted production to 7000 quintals per day, the premier stated.
Passing the challenging years, Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory has generated 8.7 billion Birr in revenue during the past nine months.
In addition, the production of the favorite Desta candy that had been halted for 14 years has resumed.
And through the Bounty of the Basket Initiative, it has become possible to produce 3,000 liters of milk and 20,000 eggs per day.
Such an encouraging reform is expected to be replicated in other factories, PM Abiy stressed.
Following his visit to Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory, the prime minister wrote: "We have witnessed the achievement of Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory that can be taken as a permanent demonstration of how reform works."
