IGAD Launches Digital Agro-Climate Advisory Services Network

Addis Ababa, May 7, 2025 (ENA) -- The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has launched the Digital Agro-Climate Advisory Services (DACAS) Knowledge Network to enhance regional collaboration and innovation in agro-climate services across Eastern Africa.
The DACAS Knowledge Network aims to support the development of climate-resilient food systems by fostering the exchange of knowledge and experiences in key thematic areas, including soil health, climate-smart agriculture, and climate resilience.
It will also serve as a platform for creating, sharing, and disseminating knowledge as well as promote the exchange of experiences and best practices among key stakeholders for evidence-based decision-making in the region.
IGAD Director for Environment and Natural Resources Daher Elmi Houssein said the DACAS Knowledge Network provides a unique opportunity for IGAD member states to come together, share insights, and foster innovation that supports farmers and communities facing the impacts of climate change.
“Now, we have a knowledge platform that allows us to exchange and share information. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for cooperation in digital agriculture and climate services,” he said.
He added that this platform is not just a knowledge network; it serves as a bridge connecting science, policy, research, and regional integration.
Lead Executive Officer of Crop Development Ministry of Agriculture, Esayas Lemma highlighted the importance of digital tools in transforming agriculture.
“The DACAS Network primarily focuses on agriculture and climate advisory services. This initiative is particularly valuable for Ethiopia, as the country is currently advancing digital agriculture under the 'Digital Ethiopia 2025' program, which is part of the Prime Minister Abiy's national initiative,” he said.
According to the lead executive officer, the Ministry of Agriculture launched digital strategy of agriculture in December 2024.
Building on that, we have developed a digital agriculture extension advisory board, he said, adding currently; the ministry is implementing several initiatives, such as the agricultural data hub, land registration, and the registration of agricultural inputs.
Esayas further noted we will greatly benefit from this initiative to ensure food security, which is our primary goal.
Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Programme Leader, Dawit Solomon said that food systems and resilience is very important against changing climate.
He added that the DACAS Knowledge Network aligns with our goal of ensuring that smallholder farmers have access to actionable climate information and innovations.
It is also is expected to build stronger linkages among national institutions, research organizations, development partners, and private sector actors involved in agricultural and climate services.
Through this collaborative framework, IGAD aims to enhance regional food security, strengthen resilience to climate shocks, and support sustainable agricultural development across its member countries.
