Ethiopia, Austria Express Commitment to Strengthen Partnership and Collaborating

Addis Ababa, April 11, 2025 (ENA) – Austrian Ambassador to Ethiopia Simone Knapp and Counsellor at the Austrian Embassy, Michael Fink met with Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, Semereta Sewasew, to discuss the robust and long-standing development cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting allowed the Austrian delegation to outline ongoing initiatives and plans, particularly following the recent appointment of a new Head of Cooperation.

Both sides highlighted the enduring relationship that spans multiple sectors. Austria emphasized its partnership with Ethiopian universities, noting the ongoing exchange of students and faculty that reflects “second and third generations of collaboration.”

They also discussed the 50-year collaboration in tourism, including scholarships for Ethiopian students.

Key areas of discussion included diplomatic training, mining, and economic investment, according to Finance Ministry.

Austria's training programs for young Ethiopian diplomats were acknowledged as important for capacity building, while ongoing collaborations in mining include joint research and scholarship opportunities. Austria also offered to enhance institutional capacity for mining regulation.


 

While Austria’s investment in Ethiopia is relatively modest, interest from Austrian businesses remains strong, with four firms currently operating in the country.

The dialogue also touched upon Austria's support for Ethiopia’s candidacy for a UN Security Council seat and potential financial assistance for reopening Ethiopia’s embassy in Vienna.

The Austrian delegation voiced support for Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms, recognizing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

The State Minister underscored the need for private sector engagement, outlining plans for a high-level business forum to facilitate dialogue on systemic challenges. Both delegations expressed their mutual commitment to strengthening their partnership and collaborating across various sectors.
