Prez Taye Praises Outgoing AU Chairperson, Reaffirms Ethiopia's Commitment to Supporting New Leadership

Addis Ababa, March 13, 2025 (ENA) –Ethiopian President Taye Atseke Selassie praised the leadership of the outgoing African Union (AU) Chairperson and reaffirmed Ethiopia's unwavering support for the new leadership.
The outgoing Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat handed over to his successor Mohamed Ali Yusuf today.
Speaking at the occasion, Ethiopia's President appreciated the outgoing chairperson for his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment in leading the African Union Commission over the last eight years.
"We are grateful that you wisely navigated through the complex currents of our continent in an ever evolving geopolitical dynamics. Indeed, your commitment brought forth tangible results,” he added.
Highlighting key achievements, President Taye noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) became a reality under Mahamat’s tenure.
Additionally, he acknowledged the historic milestone of securing Africa’s seat at the G20, calling it a "hard-won victory that underscores our continent’s rising global influence."
However, he also emphasized that while significant progress has been made, many challenges remain.
The new leadership of the Commission had assumed its mandates at a time when the global order is facing an unprecedented challenge, and multilateralism is under increasing strain than ever before."
He pointed to ongoing conflicts, the scourge of terrorism, and the climate crisis as key issues threatening Africa’s development aspirations.
"Our G20 membership is not just a seat at the table, it is a platform for Africa to actively contribute to shaping global economic objectives," he added.
Reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment, President Taye emphasized the country’s role as the host nation of the AU, pledging full support for the Commission’s new leadership.
