UNIDO, EU Award Ethiopian Factories Supplying Leather Products to Global Market

Addis Ababa, March 5, 2025 (ENA) -- UNIDO and the EU, in partnership with the Ethiopian Manufacturers Industry Development Institute, have awarded three Ethiopian leather factories for their quality and sustainable practices in supplying the global market.

Ethio Leather Industry PLC (ELICO) received a gold medal for its outstanding performance at its Awash and Abyssinia factories, while Batu earned a silver medal, which witnessed the growing global competitiveness of Ethiopia's leather industry.

Speaking at the recognition event organized by the Ethiopian Manufacturers' Industrial Development Institute, UNIDO and EU, Milikesa Jagema, Director General of the Ethiopian Manufacturers Industry Development Institute, clarified the country's commitment to boosting the global competitiveness of its leather products.

 

He emphasized ongoing initiatives to align the industry with international quality and sustainability benchmarks, positioning Ethiopia as a key global player.

According to Milikesa, the recognized factories were lauded for their dedication to product quality, employee safety, and environmental responsibility, solidifying their industry leadership.

The director general also stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to address challenges and drive sustainable growth, emphasizing that improved cooperation and communication are vital for the sector's advancement.

Aurelia Calabro, Director of UNIDO's Initiative for Sustainable Employment in the Leather Sector, reiterated UNIDO's commitment to industry growth through sustainable employment and development projects.

 

She urged operators to leverage government support, technology, and market opportunities, citing the government's focus on domestic manufacturers.

According to Calabro, UNIDO's role in driving innovation, sustainability,  and inclusive growth through partnerships,  stressing  the importance of strengthening sector associations and increasing productivity to enhance competitiveness and meet global market demands.
