AU Peace, Security Council Convenes on Current Situation in Sudan, Eastern DRC

Addis Ababa, February 14, 2025 (ENA) --- The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) convened in Addis Ababa at the level of Heads of State and Government to address the ongoing situations in Sudan and the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting was chaired by Teodoro Obiang, President of Equatorial Guinea and Chairperson of the AU PSC for February 2025.

Opening the meeting, Obiang said the situations in Sudan and DRC require an urgent action from the council.

"Today we have gathered here to establish a crucial dialog, over the very concerning situation in Sudan. This is a crisis that keeps becoming more serious and establishes challenges, not only for the Sudan population, but for the entire people of Africa," he stated.

Obiang stated that the conflict in Sudan plunged the country into a political and humanitarian crisis.

The consequences have been devastating, with hundreds of lives lost, millions displaced, and essential infrastructure severely damaged.

In light of this unfortunate circumstance, the African Union has taken various steps to tackle the situation in Sudan, including the development of a comprehensive road map aimed at resolving the conflict.

However, these initiatives have been affected negatively by several external factors.

President Obiang recommended an immediate cease fire with no conditions to stop the conflict and protect the lives of innocent civilians.

On his part, th out going African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat highlighted the ongoing wars in Sudan and AU’s efforts to address the crisis.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the AU to take concrete actions to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and work toward a peaceful resolution.

Members of the AU PSC, concerned Member States, and Senior Officials from the AU Commission, representatives of the concerned Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanisms, the League of Arab States, and the United Nations have participated at the meeting.
