Ethio telecom Generates 61.9 Billion Birr in First Half of EFY

Addis Ababa, February 12, 2025 (ENA) -- Ethio telecom announced that it has generated 61.9 billion birr in the first half of the 2016/17 Ethiopian Fiscal Year.
Ethio telecom's CEO, Frehiwot Tamiru, shared the company's impressive financial results for the first half of the 2016/17 Ethiopian fiscal year, reporting a revenue of 61.9 billion Birr.
This marks a significant 43 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
During this period, the company's mobile money platform, tele Birr, facilitated transactions exceeding one trillion Birr.
Additionally, Ethio telecom achieved notable cost-saving successes, generating 3.5 billion Birr in savings through the expansion of efficient digital services.
The CEO emphasized the company’s dedication to operational excellence and customer satisfaction, emphasizing Ethio telecom's crucial role in the country’s ongoing digital transformation.
She also unveiled a new three-year strategic plan aimed at achieving five key objectives: enhancing cost-effectiveness, improving service quality, diversifying revenue streams, creating job opportunities, and enhancing international competitiveness.
According to the CEO, Ethio telecom's infrastructure as a vital component supporting the Digital Ethiopia initiative, noting its widespread use across governmental, non-governmental, and business sectors.
She also reiterated the company’s commitment to continuously evolving Telebirr to meet the changing needs of customers and drive national economic benefits.
In the past six months, Ethio telecom has made substantial strides in expanding its network coverage and services. The company extended wireless services to 202 new areas, contributed to the national ID project, and launched 5G network access in eight cities, while expanding 4G coverage to 67 cities.
Furthermore, Ethio telecom restored services to 216 areas previously affected by natural and man-made disasters.
She emphasized that Ethio telecom’s services remain among the most affordable and competitive in Africa and globally. She also noted the ongoing implementation of Smart City and Smart Campus programs aimed at tackling technological challenges.
With more than 77 million mobile voice subscribers and over 80 million active customers across its various services, Ethio telecom maintains a leading position in Africa and ranks 17th globally.
Acknowledging the increasing digitization across sectors, the CEO reaffirmed Ethio telecom’s commitment to expanding its contributions to key areas such as education, business, health, agriculture, and other socioeconomic sectors, while continuing to fulfill its social responsibilities.
Demonstrating its commitment to innovation, Ethio telecom recently inaugurated an electric vehicle charging center, reinforcing its broader initiative to introduce advanced telecom systems in Ethiopia.
