Madagascar FM Hopes New AU Leadership Will Bring the “Africa We Want'’

Addis Ababa, February 12, 2025 (ENA) --- Madagascar Foreign Affairs Minister, Rasata Rafaravavitafika, has expressed her hope that the new leadership of the African Union will realize “the Africa we want.”
In an exclusive interview with Pulse of Africa, the minister who is in Addis Ababa to participate in the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), said that it is high time to ensure the success of all the ongoing reforms at the African Union Commission.
During the two-day session, the Executive Council will, among other deliberations, elect 6 commissioners.
The six commissioners to be elected will oversee the following portfolios: Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE); Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals (ETTIM); Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI); Infrastructure and Energy (I&E); Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS); and Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS).
Another significant focus of this year’s African Union Summit is the highly anticipated elections for AU leadership positions, including the chairperson and deputy chairperson, to be elected by heads of state and government at this weekend.
“We are going to elect all the new members of different commissions at the AUC, and we hope that with the new leadership we are going to make further efforts and make sure that the Africa we want will come to reality,” the minister stated.
Moreover, it is the moment for us to really make sure that the continent is heard with one voice.
“It is also the right moment to make sure that we really reach the main objective, which is sovereignty in all areas and independence in all decision making processes,” Rafaravavitafika stressed.
According to her, Madagascar supports the AU's efforts for better representation in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and other organizations.
“We fully support all the AU efforts to make sure that we get a better representation of Africa within the United Nations Security Council, and also in different regional and international organizations.”
The 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) kicked off today in Addis Ababa under the theme: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
