Russia Seeks UN Reform with Greater Representation of Africa: Senator Klimov

Addis Ababa, February 6, 2025 (ENA) --- Russia pursues consensus-based reform of the United Nations to better reflect the global landscape, particularly by increasing the representation of African and Latin American countries, Russian Federation Senator and Bureau Member of the Supreme Council of Russian ruling party "United Russia" Andrey Klimov said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Klimov urged for need to reform the UN institutions.

Reforming the UN is a position shared by some African nations including Ethiopia.

Russia is seeking for the reorganization of all UN institutions based on the consensus of all nations, he said.

“We understand now lack of participation of African countries and countries of Latin America at the UNSC. We can also witness the lack of participation of offices among the executives,” Klimov added.

He is opposed to a system where minority of nations holds disproportionate influence over the majority.

But we are sure that it is not possible to prolong that way without reforms.

Many things happened during almost 80 years period of the UN, and we need to prepare the UN to deliver properly in the future, he elaborated.

In recent years, African countries including Ethiopia and the African Union have been pushing for reform and greater representation at the UN.

The common African position on the UNSC Reform was adopted by the AU member states in 2005.
