National ID Protecting Rights of Citizens, Ethiopia’s Interest: Program Dep. Coordinator

Addis Ababa, February 6, 2025 (ENA) -- The National ID (Fayda) is protecting Ethiopian citizens' rights and safeguards the country's economic, political, and social interests, National ID Program Deputy Coordinator Rahel Yitbarek stated.

"Fayda for Ethiopia" discussion forum, organized by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) in collaboration with the National ID Program, is underway at the ENA in Addis Ababa today.

In Ethiopia, the digital ID has been implemented to ensure the right of residents to be identified, to build trust between service providers and recipients, and to establish transparency, accountability, and efficient systems at the national level.

Accordingly, the National ID Program established and put into operation by law, and over 12 million people have sao far registered to get the digital ID.

During the discussion forum, Rahel said the national ID, as its local name "Fayda", has significant benefit to provide multifaceted services to Ethiopia including protecting the rights of citizens and safeguard the economic, political, and social interests of the country.

Rahel noted that many residents have registered for the digital ID in Addis Ababa and said that efforts are being made to expand it to the regions.

The digital ID will enable the connection of service providers and recipients to provide efficient digital services, she added.

Ethiopian News Agency CEO, Seife Derbe on his part stated that ENA is the country's news agency entrusted with the mission of protecting Ethiopia's national interests.

The long-standing news agency has created an institutional structure that can strengthen multi-national unity.

According to him, ENA is fulfilling its national mission by organizing national benefit discussion forums in addition to producing news and news-related contents and media products.

The Fayda for Ethiopia discussion forum, which focuses on the national digital ID, takes into account the benefits it has for the country's economic and social sectors.

The CEO said that ENA, as a member of the BRICS Media Presidium, will work to ensure that the benefit has not only an Ethiopian but also an African aspiration.

The program is working to provide unique digital identification numbers to the residents in Ethiopia with the goal of providing advanced financial, social, public, and other services that identify a physical person using foundational individualizing mechanisms rather than functional ones.
