Prime Minister Abiy Emphasizes PP Congress’ Pivotal Role in Shaping Ethiopia's Future trajectory

Addis Ababa January 31, 2025 (ENA)—Prosperity Party (PP) President and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the congress's pivotal role in shaping Ethiopia's trajectory for the coming years.

The party commenced its highly anticipated second congress in Addis Ababa today as
it has embarked on charting course for Ethiopia's future.

Addressing party members and delegates, PP President and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the congress's pivotal role in shaping Ethiopia's trajectory for the coming years.

The president underscored the importance of the congress in evaluating progress, formulating new strategies, and electing capable leaders.

He stressed that the discussions and decisions made during the congress will determine the nation's path forward.

A key objective, he noted, is to ensure the congress is both democratic and inclusive, reflecting the diversity of the Ethiopian people.

"This congress is crucial as we are here to formulate ideas that will guide Ethiopia for the next several years, to elect leaders capable of implementing the ideas, and to establish systems that will ensure success. But it is equally important that this process, and its outcome, be democratic and participatory."

President Abiy highlighted PP's unique position in Ethiopian political history, stressing that it is the first party to hold a congress with representation from all Ethiopian ethnic groups.

He expressed his confidence that this inclusion, combined with robust democratic dialogue and the selection of competent leaders from all corners of the country, will pave the way for a successful new chapter for Ethiopia.

The president also called for the party's successful initiatives such as the Green Legacy to transition from campaigns into ingrained cultural practices.

He also emphasized the importance of national pride and the need to nurture, develop, and utilize Ethiopia's resources effectively.

Reflecting on the past five years, the president described the period as a "take-off" phase, marked by overcoming significant challenges and laying the groundwork for future growth.

He declared that the congress underway marks the end of this initial phase and the beginning of a period of accelerated development and tangible results.

Abiy assured attendees that the impact of ongoing projects will become increasingly visible in the coming year.

The president disclosed that membership of the party has reached 15.7 million, a figure he said unparalleled in Africa.

He also acknowledged the relatively short history of multi-party politics in Ethiopia, spanning less than 60 years, further emphasizing the critical lesson learned that a party must not only initiate change but also lead it.

Identifying problems is insufficient, Abiy argued, adding that a party must provide solutions.

The second PP congress is expected to continue, with discussions and decisions focused on key policy issues, leadership selection, and strategic planning for the future of Ethiopia.
