FM Gedion Unveils Ethiopia’s Bid for AU-PSC Membership

Addis Ababa December 18/2024 (ENA)—Minister of Foreign Affairs,Gedion Timothewos met with African ambassadors residing in Addis Ababa and unveiled  Ethiopia's candidacy for the African Union's Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC).

During the meeting at Skylight Hotel, the Foreign Minister  exchanged views on issues of mutual concern and unveiled Ethiopia's candidacy for the African Union's Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) for the 2025-2027 term.

 The Minister sought the support of AU member states, emphasizing Ethiopia's long-standing commitment to peace, stability, and unity across the continent.

 Gedion highlighted Ethiopia’s key role in African decolonization and its founding membership in both the OAU and AU.

 He reaffirmed Ethiopia's commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and advancing Africa’s collective voice, particularly in achieving Agenda 2063 goals.

 The Minister emphasized that the promotion of peace and stability is central to Ethiopia’s foreign policy.

In this connection, he mentioned Ethiopia’s success in the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the conflict in north Ethiopia, and its ongoing efforts to resolve the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) dispute through AU-facilitated dialogue with Sudan and Egypt.

 Gedion said Ethiopia’s extensive experience in peace support missions and conflict resolution supports its bid for the AU-PSC.

He emphasized Ethiopia's capacity to contribute significantly to the AU’s peace and security efforts.

The minister further expressed confidence that Ethiopia’s leadership in peace operations would make it a valuable member of the Peace and Security Council.

 He urged ambassadors to consider Ethiopia’s strong track record in their decision-making process.
