UNIDO Director General Calls Upon Industrialized Countries to Deliver Commitments from Past

Addis Ababa November 7/2024(ENA)-The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director General, Gerd Müller called on the industrialized and the G7 countries to fulfill their commitments from the past.

The Director General underscored that Debt relief for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), fair access to global financial markets and compensation for damages caused by climate change are imperative for Africa’s accelerated growth.

In his speech on the “World Without Hunger Conference” being held in Ethiopia, Müller said the industrialized countries should discharge their commitments.

“Now, I am calling on the industrialized countries and the G-7, they must fulfill their commitments from the past. And that is the 0.7 goal, the Climate Fund commitment, a debt relief, especially for LDCs in Africa.

He further urged the industrialized nations of the globe to deliver on their given commitments on access to the finance market and fair trade as well as market conditions.

The Director General also reaffirmed UNIDO’s commitment, remaining   as a partner for industrialization, economic growth and job creation in Africa. Noting that Africa has the strength and enormous potential, Müller indicated six of the fastest growing economies in the world are Africans.

He also stressed the need for strengthening partnership to accelerate African development and realize a world without hunger ambition.

“So we all know Africa has great potential. We talked about this the last two days. But the continent needs real partnership,” he noted.

The Director General also underlined that a world without hunger is  possible, with peace, good governments, huge investments in Modern sustainable agriculture, and fair and sustainable supply chains with progress by innovation and industrialization.

As the conference has explored innovative solutions and new partnerships over the past two days, he said adding that now we have to turn these into concrete actions.

“Our new study we have presented here…… shows we do have the technologies and the knowledge only missing is the political will of the world's politicians.”
