Addis Ababa October 23/2024 (ENA)-Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, on the 16th BRICS Summit, called for strong intra BRICS economic cooperation across sectors.
In his keynote address to the summit, the Prime Minister stressed the need for reinforcing cooperation in the spheres of manufacturing, agriculture, energy, tourism, and importantly, artificial intelligence.
“Intra BRICS trade, investment and tourism can ignite economic growth that not only benefits our member states, but also serves as a model for cooperation and solidarity in addressing global challenges.
We must leverage our diverse economies and high growth potential to achieve tangible economic gains that uplift our people,” Abiy underscored.
In this regard, the Premier stated that Ethiopia exemplifies the practical relevance of its partnership embodying the hope and potential that BRICS represents.
“Our nation now, the third largest economy in Sub Saharan Africa, is endowed with a young and dynamic workforce, vast arable land and abundant renewable energy resources.”
These assets present unparalleled opportunities for investment and trade. And our ongoing macro economic reforms have unlocked new avenues for growth, according to the Prime Minister.
He mentioned Ethiopia’s commitment and its success story on a climate resilient economy through a Green Legacy Initiative (GLI).
“Our Green Legacy Initiative, which mobilized our citizens to plant 40 billion seedlings in six years stand as a testament to our commitment to sustainable and climate resilient economic growth,” the PM elaborated.
He also highlighted that Ethiopia is equally committed to ensuring food security, having become the largest wheat producer in Africa through enhanced productivity.
Speaking on the country’s ongoing massive urban infrastructure, Abiy noted that: “our investments in smart cities and tourism development highlight our cultural and historical richness, drawing visitors from around the globe.”
