Corridor Dev’t Project Transforming Addis Ababa to Smart, Hospitable City: Scholar

Addis Ababa October 18/2024(ENA)-The corridor development project being undertaken in Addis Ababa is commendable as it is transforming the city in to smart and hospitable, Associate Professor, Researcher and Lecturer of architecture at Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), Eshetu Gelan said.
Eshetu, who is also Deputy Chairperson of Infrastructure Development and Transport Affairs Standing Committee at House of People’s Representatives, told ENA that a city doesn’t just defined by its physical structures but by its residents, infrastructure, and the myriad activities taking place within it.
He also underscored the importance of effective planning in urban development, which he believes is essential for enhancing the quality of life in cities.
In this regard, the corridor development project in Addis Ababa is crucial to transform the city into a smart urban environment.
Addis Ababa corridor development project aims to achieve international smart city standards, which would change the city's appearance.
Drawing on experiences from developed countries, he noted that comprehensive master plans can effectively guide urban growth for decades and centuries, expressing optimism that the current corridor development could significantly improve urban facilities across Addis Ababa.
“The proactive approach of the Addis Ababa City Administration in engaging with residents regarding the corridor development project is encouraging and commendable. The administration has been consulting with the community and providing compensation to those relocated due to the development, fostering a collaborative spirit between residents and the project,” Eshetu stated.
Eshetu explained that the nation need to continue expanding the corridor development projects across the country by taking lessons from Addis Ababa that would serve as a blueprint for future development initiatives, fostering sustainable growth and improving the lives of its citizens.
While acknowledging the challenges associated with such projects, Eshetu emphasized community consultation as vital and when residents are involved in the process, they are more likely to support developments that will ultimately benefit them.
“Other cities in the country should learn from the corridor development in Addis Ababa. When communities are consulted, development is embraced, as the primary beneficiaries are the residents themselves, ultimately benefiting all Ethiopians. The corridor development initiative promises to enhance various urban services, including sewerage systems, water supply, and electrification, digitalization, and transportation infrastructure.”
Finally, he expressed hope that government will be committed to closely monitor the development projects to ensure that they are being executed effectively and efficiently.
