Foreigners Claim Rediscovering New Face of Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa September 8/2024 (ENA) Foreigners familiar with Addis Ababa in the past are rediscovering a new face of the city.

Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, has undergone a striking metamorphosis, leaving both returning visitors and newcomers in awe.

The city's rapid development was particularly evident during the recent African Cities Forum, where it showcased significant advancements in urban planning and infrastructure.

Professor David Francis, former Foreign Affairs Minister of Sierra Leone and current Chairman of the Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center Board, expressed his astonishment at the city's progress.

"I've been a friend of Ethiopia for a very long time, visiting Addis Ababa frequently over nearly two decades," he remarked. "I was here in February, and upon returning in August, I witnessed a shocking positive transformation. Driving through the city at night, with its beautiful neon lights, I felt as if I were in Shanghai, Brussels, London, or New York. Addis Ababa has truly become the proud capital of Africa."

Professor Wang Jingping from South East University in China, an expert in urban planning, echoed these sentiments. Comparing his current visit to his first trip in 2016, he noted.

‘‘This time it is a fifth time I visited Addis here. I see so many changes comparing with my first trip in 2016.’’

He said he sees so many changes. According to him, infrastructure, parks, and modern buildings are evidence of rapid growth.

The city's development has not only impressed returning visitors but also captivated first-time guests. Dr. Sina Schlemmer, a researcher on urban development issues from France, shared her positive first impressions: "What I found very striking is the construction going on everywhere. I'm impressed by the road infrastructure – there wasn't the traffic jam I expected. Despite the challenges of building in a hilly city, so much is happening."

Dr. Schlemmer drew parallels between Addis Ababa's growth and that of her home city, Paris, emphasizing the importance of patience in urban development. "Development comes with change, and change needs time," she explained. "We always want to see quick, presentable results, but as Paris shows, change needs time. We need to give cities time to develop what they want to be."

The transformation of Addis Ababa, driven by corridor development and strategic urban planning, has created a captivating impression on international observers. As the city continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to Ethiopia's commitment to sustainable urban growth and modernization.
