Institute Undertaking Studies to Ensure Ethiopia's Benefit in BRICS  

Addis Ababa June 11/2024 (ENA)Studies that help to ensure Ethiopia's benefit as a BRICS member country have been underway, according to the Institute of Foreign Affairs. 

Institute of Foreign Affairs Asian and Pacific Director-General Anteneh Getachew told Ethiopian News Agency that the institute's commitment to supporting Ethiopia in research is aimed at aligning policy directions to maximize mutual benefits within BRICS.

He noted that Ethiopia has got abundant human resources, extensive market access, natural wealth, and is the third diplomatic destination in Africa and globally.

These opportunities will yield mutual benefits for BRICS member countries and Ethiopia's active engagement in the bloc will facilitate reciprocal exchanges, ensuring practical mutual benefits, Anteneh elaborated.

According to him, research efforts are underway to monitor economic shifts in the Asia Pacific region to safeguard the nation's interests. 

Additionally, he revealed that there are ongoing studies aimed at bolstering Ethiopia's economic diplomacy in the region in order to enhance trade and investment opportunities.

The director-general, who highlighted Ethiopia's robust bilateral and multilateral ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region, added that significant practical agreements have been forged, particularly over the last six years.

As example, he cited the 17 types of agreements made with China and  elevated to a level where the relationship between the two countries entered "all weather strategic partnership." 

While addressing BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, from 10-11 June 2024, Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie highlighted the various measures Ethiopia has taken to enhance its active role in the BRICS family in line with its national development priorities.

The minister also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s resolve to the collective pursuit of peace and progress, inclusive and sustainable development, and effective multilateralism.

Since assuming its membership in the BRICS alliance in January 2024, Ethiopia's active participation in various BRICS meetings has started to yield a plethora of benefits for the country.
