Thirteen Medium Size Irrigation Projects Worth of 805 M Birr Under Construction in Eastern Wollegal Zone

Addis Ababa June 5/2024 (ENA):- Thirteen small and medium size Irrigation projects which would benefit 3,400 farmers are under construction with 805 million birr, Eastern Wollegal Zone Irrigation Development Office Head, Mengistu Alemayehu told ENA.

Four of the projects will be completed this year, he said.

He also said  the federal government allocated 13 billion birr for the  construction of a large scale irrigation project on Anger River and its contract document has been inked with a contractor.

 

The irrigation infrastructure development is being undertaken in the zone as part of the national agricultural development program, he said.

 Accordingly, Irrigation development projects are underway at zonal and woreda levels, he added.

 He added that the Oromia Construction Corporation has already deployed materials to the project sites to launch the construction.

Upon completion within two years, the farmers in the two zones and three woredas will be beneficiaries, he noted.

Farmers in Eastern Wollega Zone approached by ENA expressed their delight in the commencement of the construction of the  projects.

 

After completion, the farmers said they can produce more agricultural produce during the dry season, hence, they are ready to extend support for the timely completion of the projects.

The government is carrying out various development projects in Eastern Wollega Zone to the benefits of the communities where the Nekemt-Bure asphalt road and Nekemt Airport are a case in point.
