Oromia Region striving to Cultivate close to 11 Million Hectares Land in Crop Season 

Addis Ababa, June 4/2024 (ENA) The agricultural Bureau of Oromia region announced that it has been working hard to cover about 10.8 million hectares of cultivated land with various crops in the current 2024/2025 crop season.

As ENA reporter witnessed, the maize cluster farming cultivation has already commenced in Gubbo Sayo Woreda, East Wollega Zone of Oromia region  in the presence of regional officials. 

The Agriculture Bureau Head of the region, Getu Gemechu said activities have been carried out to cover 10.8 million hectares of lands in this rainy season with various crops. 


 

So far 8.6 million hectares of land have been prepared and some 2.6 million hectares have been covered by various crops in this rainy season in the region. 

The region has planned to cultivate some 771, 378 hectares of land in the East Wollega zone alone, the head indicated.

"Our farmers are actively engaging in farming activities in all zones of the region. We have provided training and necessary agricultural inputs for them in order to maximize the production." 

Accordingly, fertilizers and improved seeds have also been distributed to the farmers, Getu pointed out. 


 

East Wollega Zone Administrator Wogari Negera said on his part that currently the people of Wollega are turning their face into development activities particularly, into agricultural development as peace is prevailing in zones. 

The East Wollega zone is tremendously known for the production of maize, he said, adding that attention has been given in this crop season to engage farmers effectively to enhance production. 

East Wollega Zonal Agriculture Bureau, Asfew Hambisa on his part said the zone has currently prepared land and seeds for this rainy season, adding that "our farmers remain vigilant and prepared for farming activities."

The regional officials have also visited avocado and other seedlings prepared for the upcoming Green Legacy Initiative.
