Japan Pledges to further cooperate in Implementation of Peace Agreement, Reconstruction Efforts, and Japan’s FM Says


Addis Ababa August 3/2023(ENA):- Japan pledged to further cooperate with Ethiopia toward the implementation of peace agreement, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen held discussion with Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa at his office today.

 
During a joint press briefing he gave to local media and foreign correspondents after the discussion with Demeke, Hayashi said he is delighted to visit Ethiopia for the first time in about four years.
 
He added we had a frank and fruitful exchange of views on the bilateral relation, regional situations and cooperation in the international arena.

“At the outset of the meeting, I mentioned Japan’s support for the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF, and stated that Japan would give serious consideration to further cooperation towards the implementation of the agreement.”
 
He also explained that I introduced Japan's efforts through “investing in people” and stated that Japan is willing to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the economic field.
 

According to him , they discussed various issues in the international community, such as the opaque and unfair development finance and the strengthening of the functions of the United Nations including the Security Council.
 
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen on his part said Ethiopia attaches great value to its relationship with Japan and we had productive discussion on bilateral and multilateral issues of common interest. 

He added that we agreed to further strengthen multifaceted cooperation that endured the test of times.
 

In our talks, we pledged to deepen our partnership in the political, economic and social sectors, Demeke said, adding that in particulars, we renewed our commitment to strengthening our investment, trade and development cooperation. 

We have also agreed to work closely to further enhance our bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

“I would like to express my government’s appreciation for the continued support from the government and people of Japan in our consolidation of peace, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts,” Demeke said.
 

The visit of the foreign minister to Ethiopia is historic and the illustration of strong relationship between the two countries, the minister added.
