Israeli NGO Provides Free Eye Treatments for More Than 2,000 Ethiopians

Addis Ababa July 20/2023(ENA)  The Israeli non-governmental organization, Operation Ethiopia, has provided free eye treatments, including sight-restoring cataract surgeries, to 2,000 people in Gondar and Addis Ababa, according Operation Ethiopia founder and director Professor Morris Hartstein.

Briefing journalists today, he said the organization was founded to provide quality eye care, including treatment and prevention of blindness and eye disease to poor people in Ethiopia, through mobile clinic.


 

“We have treated over 2,000 people and we provide medication and glasses. We treat most of the people, about 80 to 90 percent, on the spot as we can discover their problems. People who have more complicated problems, we refer them to hospitals. And a few years ago we also started doing cataract outreach,” he added.

Over the last two weeks, Operation Ethiopia has performed 400 sight-restoring cataract surgeries.

Stating that the NGO has also been providing training for health professionals and medical doctors, the founder and director said “we would like to scale up to have bigger delegations.”

Israel's Ambassador to Ethiopia, Aleligne Admasu said on his part that his country will further strengthen its cooperation with Ethiopia on various fields.

Thousands have benefited from the free eye care that Operation Ethiopia provided for years, he pointed out, announcing that Save A Child’s Heart will be in Ethiopia next week.

There are 15 NGOs working in the area of food security across the country, the ambassador noted, and added that his country will continue to support modernizing the agriculture sector.
