Ethiopia Joins Switch Africa Green Program

Addis Ababa ENA August 28/2011 Ethiopia Joins today Switch Africa Green Program on the occasion of the conference held here in Addis Ababa.

The program focuses on agriculture and management of industrial waste disposal.

Addressing the conference, Environment, Forests and Climate Change Commissioner,  Professor Fekadu Beyene said Ethiopia’s decision to joint Switch Africa Green Program will further boost the nation’s efforts in implementing its program of Climate Resilient Green Economy.

He added that the program would create a conducive condition for coordinating the planned activities of the public and private sectors in fostering the development of climate resilient green economy in the country.

Professor Fekadu noted that a national steering committee is established to mainstream the program into the national action plan relating to the initiative.

 Also speaking on the conference, Acting Resident and Humanitarian for the UN Systems in Ethiopia, Steve Were Omamo stated that Ethiopia has set an example for the development of climate resilient green economy in Africa.

He noted that the UN will continue to provide support for Ethiopia’s green economy program.

Some 20 million Euro is earmarked for the whole program in which 3 million Euro is alloted for Ethiopia.

Switch Africa Green is a regional program that will be implemented every three years in Africa.

Six African countries including Burkina Fasso, Ghana, Mauritius, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda had joined the program, and Ethiopia has just joined in.
