Education Roadmap to Partially Enter into Force in the Next Academic Year

Addis Ababa August 21/2019 The Ministry of Education announced today that the education road-map, which believed to change the existing education system of the country, will be partially implemented in the next Ethiopian academic year.

Briefing journalists, Minister of Education, Tilaye Gete said the ministry has decided to introduce the 6-2-4 education system which is six years of primary schooling, tag on two years of junior secondary and four year of secondary schooling.

He said that about 35 newly identified proposals have been incorporated into the road-map during the preceding consultation meetings, out of which 12 items will be implement in the next academic year.

Accordingly, he said students will take regional examination at grade 6, while they will sit at grade 8 for national examination.

Similarly, the national examination that has been given at grade 10 will be canceled since the coming academic year and higher education entry exam will be given at grade 12.

Furthermore, students can learn Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) from grade 12, TVETs will offer courses for students from level1 up to PhD levels, he said.

The existing schooling system follows 8 years of primary, 2 years of general secondary, and 2 years of preparatory senior secondary education.
