The Renovation of IES Museum Completed, Opened for Visitors

Addis Ababa ENA August 20/2019 Refurbishment of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies Ethnographic Museum has completed and opened for visitors, the Institute disclosed today.

Renovation of the museum was completed with an outlay of 2.4 million birr through a grant agreement made between the governments of Ethiopia and Japan.

Mafirpi, an Italian world-class heritage renovation contractor has refurbished the museum in a period of three months.

During the handing over ceremony, General Director of the Institute, Takele Merid said the museum was in service for more than 86 years without any restoration.

But now refurbishment of the museum has completed and is ready for visitors, he said, adding that preparations are also made to put in place all the necessary facilities to begin library service associated to the museum.

Restoration of the museum would help to further promote researches on Ethiopian studies and make it a viable heritage to transcend to the future generation, he noted.

Speaking on the occasion Japanese, Ambassador to Ethiopia Daisuke Matsunga said realization of the renovation project, which is fully covered by Japanese people, is the result of the excellent diplomatic relations dating back to the 1930’s.

The Ethiopian Studies Ethnographic Museum is the first university museum in Ethiopia, which is under the direct supervision of Addis Ababa University.
