Ethiopia to Execute Trilateral Cooperation on Renewable Energy

Addis Ababa ENA July 31/2019 Ethiopia will implement a Trilateral South-South Cooperation on Renewable Energy Project that enhances access to renewable energy technologies by partnering with China and Sri Lanka.

A one-day inception workshop which aims at promoting and seeking the potentials of the three countries on renewable energy resources and technology kicked off here today.

The project that will be launched next month would help Ethiopia and Sir Lanka in the main in  meeting their needs for clean, affordable and suitable energy by focusing on bio-gas and solar photovoltaic technologies.  

Water, Irrigation and Energy State Minister Frehiowt Woldehana said the project will become operational in the near future and it will demonstrate the applicability of bio-gas and solar photovoltaic technologies.

“I believe this will significantly increase the use of renewable energy technologies in Ethiopia and Sri Lanka, while fostering cooperation between the partner countries in pursuit of achieving SDGs,” she noted.

The Ethiopia-China-Sri Lanka Renewable Energy transfer project, which will be implemented from 2019 to 2021, would be funded by the Chinese government.

Noting that Ethiopia has been undertaking a nationwide electrification program since 2017, Frehiowt added that this Trilateral South-South Cooperation on Renewable Energy can provide a higher level of service for energy intensive businesses and even small industries.

UNDP Ethiopia Resident Representative, Turhan Saleh said Trilateral South-South Cooperation on Renewable Energy is pivotal to leverage the technological experience of China in renewable energy that the country has accumulated.

He stated that access to renewable energy is one of critical concerns across the globe saying, “this is a multilateral cooperation project, we shall follow the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and share benefits.”    

The representative pledged UNDP will give provide expertise assistance for the realization of the project.

Minister Counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs of China to Ethiopia, Liu Yu said on her part the project is crucial for renewable energy technology dissemination and scaling up climate resilient growth, and supports access to energy and sustainable resource.

According to her, China is determined to contribute its share for the realization of the Trilateral South-South Cooperation on Renewable Energy through expertise, finance and leveraging its experience.
