President Urges for Enhanced Efforts toward Unity, Prosperity

Addis Ababa May 29/2018 President Mulatu Teshome urged the people of Ethiopia to renew commitment in working for unity, growth and prosperity of the country while celebrating the 27th anniversary of May 28. In order to build unity and realize development, the President emphasized the need to sustain the best practices and achievements which observed over the past 27 years. The President made the remark at the closing ceremony of the 27th anniversary of May 28, which marked the downfall of the military regime yesterday. He mentioned the federal system that the country has introduced 23 years ago, and the creation of a demanding society as well as the development registered in all aspects as the achievements of May 28. He said that the federal system that Ethiopia has been implementing for more than two decades has helped to create an advocating and assertive society that is struggling against poverty, violation of democratic rights and injustice. “This [demanding society] is a big achievement that we should be proud of; because it is pushing the government towards change. We understand that this is the solution for sustainable peace, development and democracy.” Mulatu said the government is striving for change due to this fact and meet the publics' demands. The president said this year's anniversary is unique as it is celebrated in the midst of fast and broad change. He mentioned the efforts carried out to ensure the rights of citizens, who have been in detained here and abroad; expanding the political space and facilitate the returning of political leaders who have been in exile for long as some of the changes. He also mentioned the various measures that have been taking to fight corruption over the past years. In this regard, the President called upon the public to vow for the sustainability of the new phase of development while celebrating the day. “The victory [May 28] has come for the benefits and rights, freedom and dignity of all Ethiopians not for migration and detention, hunger and poverty, disagreement and conflict. It shouldn’t be. The time that Ethiopians become enemies of Ethiopians has to end; rather we have to strive with one heart, love and care to achieve the journey towards renaissance,” he stressed. Mayor of Addis Ababa City Driba Kuma said on his part that the day is a milestone for Ethiopia’s multifaceted developments. Higher government officials, ambassadors, leaders of opposition parties, religious leaders and other invited guests attended the closing ceremony of May 28.
