Southern Region Perfect Example of Ethiopian Unity: PM Abiy
Hawassa April 26/2018 The Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional State is the perfect example of Ethiopian unity, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said. Addressing tens of thousands of residents of Hawassa town and its environs at the town’s stadium, Abiy said the people of the regional state is an example in accommodating diversified culture and tradition. “Accommodating diversified cultures and traditions in its various ways and maintaining the peaceful continuation of its commitment to realizing development and unity, the region is no less than Ethiopia in the miniature,” Abiy said. The Premier made the remark in recognition to the peaceful coexistence in the regional state, which is home to more than 45 indigenous ethnic groups. Despite achievements in multi-sectoral development programs, there is still much left to be done in meeting the development demands of the residents of the region, he said. “Thus, the youth must not remain idle but strive to work closely with the government to address problems and realize a prosperous and peaceful nation,” the Premier stressed. He also said that the people of the region in collaboration with the other people of the country have played outshining role in promoting equality and democracy. The peoples of the region are among the pioneers in traditional saving and age-long social associations that expand into rural areas long before the establishment of banks and insurance companies in the country, Abiy appreciatively said. Noting that the region is endowed with various natural and historical resources, Abiy said that the federal and regional governments should work hand in hand to fully exploit the potentials in the region in the best interest of the residents. Regional State Chief Administrator, Dessie Dalke said “peoples of SNNPR with other Ethiopians have paid sacrifices for the prevailing unity of the country.” “We, the people of this region are committed to exert our ultimate force as ever to see a developed and peaceful Ethiopia,” Dessie assured. He urged the Premier to intensify the fight against corruption, rooting out bad governance and improve public satisfaction in service delivery.
