PM Abiy Discusses Design, Dev't Plan for Riverside Project with Chinese Institute

Addis  Ababa  27/2019  Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed discussed the design and development plan of the ‘Beautifying Sheger’ riverside project proposed by Chinese institute.

The Premier has discussed the plan with the engineers during his visit to the China Urban Construction Design and Research Institute.

Office of the Prime Minister said the Chinese government is supporting the development of 12kms of the riverside project and construction of a central square by. The total project covers 56kms.

During the discussion, Abiy appreciated the efforts made by the engineers to contextualize the needs of the city, and provided direction for the development to commence.

The "Beautifying Sheger" project is a three-year initiative of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed aiming to change the face of Addis Ababa.

The project aims at making the capital a tourist destination and converts the river banks, which currently are garbage areas, into green areas at a cost of 29 billion Birr.

The Prime Minister will host a fundraising dinner in May to mobilize resource for the implementation of the project.

So far, foreign companies and embassies have shown interest for the ‘Dine for Sheger’ event aimed to make Addis Ababa green and clean.

Similarly, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the China Academy of Space Technology to inspect Ethiopia’s 70kg Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing Satellite ETRSS-1.

Ethiopia, under the auspices of the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI), has been in the process of developing the Satellite with the support of the Chinese government.

ETRSS-1 is expected to be launched into space before the end of this year, according to the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Satellite is expected to monitor weather patterns for better agricultural planning, early warning and forestry management.
