Commission Proposes Postponement of Census

Addis Ababa March 19/2019 The Population and Housing Census Commission proposed the postponement of the national population and housing census until the internally displaced people repatriated to their villages.

The proposal should be approved by the joint session of the House of Federation and House of Peoples' Representatives in order to postpone the census.

The Commission in its session held Monday, evaluated the activities conducted so far in order to conduct the census due to be conducted in April 2019.

Evaluating that technical preparations have conducted well, the Commission noted that some activities that are fundamental to conduct the census have not been completed yet.

Furthermore, the Commission noted the fact that many internally displaced people are still in shelters and repatriating them to their villages needs extra work and time.

Considering these, the Commission concluded that additional time is needed to complete these activities.

Accordingly, the Commission has decided with majority vote to present the proposal for the postponement of the census to the House of Federation and House of Peoples' Representatives for decision.

The 4th national census was postponed from 2018 due to security challenges that affected some parts of the country.
