Promoting Democratic Unity and Nat'l Consensus Themes of May 28 Victory Day, Says GoCAO Minister

Addis Ababa May 17/02018 Public discussions and events aimed at promoting democratic unity and national consensus will be at the center of this year's May 28 celebration, Government Communication Affairs Minister Ahmed Shide said. At a press briefing he gave today, Ahmed said the foundation for the new Ethiopia where the identity of citizens is respected and democratic unity built was laid on this day. According to the Minister, the day will be celebrated by holding various events across the country, in embassies and missions abroad. May 28 is a victory day for the people of Ethiopia when they pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to bring a democratic federal system that respects diversity of the people, Ahmed elaborated. It is also a day which opened a new chapter in the history of the country in various spheres, including in the economy which is one of the fastest growing in the world. Ahmed recalled the recent lack of peace and uncertainty associated with injustice and other issues and said the government is taking a number of different reform measures to address the causes of the problems to solidify the gains achieved following May 28. The Minister called on the community to participate in the events to be conducted as it is crucial for the achievement of the country's goal and other victories. Ahmed emphasized that the people must stand alongside the government to build a strong democratic and united country. May 28 Victory Day is being celebrated for the 27th time.
