12th ANDM Congress Kicks off in Bahir Dar

Addis Ababa September 27/2018 The 12th organizational congress of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) kicked off this afternoon in Bahir Dar. Opening the Congress, ANDM Chairperson Demeke Mekonen expressed hope that the congress would pass resolutions that would further the process of the ongoing reform. Saying that ANDM has contributed a lot to the current reforms in the country and the region, Demeke asserted that it will continue to exert maximum effort for its success. Saying that the reform has come after a severe sacrifice, he added that the journey requires higher level of responsibility and caution. Running a head is better for the continuation of the reforms and called all including the opposition to stand with the organization for the common vision. “We solve our complex problems not only working alone; we need to work in collaboration with political parties, sister organizations, neighboring region and other concerned bodies”, Demeke added. Demeke noted the existence of two extreme political views at this juncture, which could be threat for the unity and stability of the country. He said that ANDM considers the views that ignore the identity of nations and nationalities under the umbrella of unity and the other that focuses on extreme nationalism as threats to the people and the country.
In this regard, Demeke, who is Deputy Prime Minister of the country, underlined the need for ANDM to stand between the two extreme views and discharge its responsibility of providing a viable alternative to the people. To play this role, the organization has the responsibility to build its leadership with new culture. As the current war is between the old and new thoughts, Demeke said that “we are sure that the new will win”. To make this happen, the organization need to be equipped with progressive and democratic views, he added. Demeke expressed hope that the Congress will bring people who have the skill and courage to the leadership and pass resolutions that would help to build unity of purpose thereby successfully lead the reform. Chief Administrator of Amhara Region, Gedu Andargachew on his part said ANDM is experienced organization that has been working to solve the problems of the region and the country.
ANDM will continue to discharge its responsibility for the prevalence of democracy and good governance as well as development by learning from the previous mistakes and successes. It will also continue to strive to make the process of the reform successful and realize the aspirations of the people of the region and the country in seeing a democratic and prosperous Ethiopia. “The current reforms being underway in the country will help us to transfer a prosperous nation to the next generation. So, we have to learn the strength and weakness of other countries and come up with solutions that would address problem we have been facing”, he said. The 12th Amhara National Democratic Movement congress, which opened today, is expected to pass different decisions including selecting capable leader for its organization.
