Canada Desires to Play Constructive Role in Resolving Conflict in Ethiopia: Canadian FM

Addis Ababa November 14/2014 (ENA) Canada desires to play a constructive role in resolving the conflict in northern Ethiopia in a balanced and speedy manner, according to Canadian Foreign Minister.

Members of the Ethiopian Diaspora community in Canada  discussed the current situation in Ethiopia with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and Canadian Minister for Housing Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussein on Saturday.

Joly said during the occasion that Canada has been closely monitoring the conflict in northern Ethiopia and trying to understand the situation.

She added Canada wants the conflict to be resolved peacefully and her country wants to play a constructive and positive role in the process.

According to the minister, Canada backs the efforts of Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has been appointed by the AU Commission as the Horn of Africa's envoy to  resolve the conflict peacefully.

Citing that Canada wants peace in Ethiopia, she said, Canada would support all the efforts to bring peace to Ethiopia.

The minister also stated that Canada will provide the necessary humanitarian assistance to the victims of the conflict.

Joly further noted that Canada would accept the recent report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights as it is impartial.

Stating that Canada would like to strengthen its bilateral relations with Ethiopia, the minister said the Prime Ministers of the two countries also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two nations with a phone call on Saturday.
