Family Planning by Choice Project Contributes to Enhance Capacity of Health Facilities, Professionals

Addis Ababa, May 19 /2021 (ENA)  The contribution of Family Planning by Choice project conducted over the past three years with a view to build the capacity of health facilities and professionals has been successful, according to Ministry of Health.

The project’s continuation needs budget allocation from the government and support from partners, it was learned.

UK government has provided Ethiopia with 90 million pounds for the implementation of the project in the nine regions and the two city administrations across the country.

A workshop organized by the Ministry of Health was held today to announce the completion of the three years project.

Partner organizations discussed on the achievements of the project and called on the government of Ethiopia and partners to continue support in a bid to further extend the implementation of the project.

Mother and Child Health Director at Ministry of Health Meseret Zelalem said at the workshop that the project has contributed to improve the maternal and child health services in the country.  

“The financial support extended to implement the project has helped us introduce new equipment and address health problems as well as enabled us to achieve positive results in ensuring the quality of family planning of the nation,” Meseret said.

According to her, the project was implemented in 4,000 health institutions to deliver family planning services.

The project has been also instrumental in integrating 2,000 health institutions with center of excellences and quality centers for technical support as well as capacity building, she added.

In order to further continue with these encouraging achievements of the project, government and other partners should allocate budget, the director urged.  

On top of UKaid, Marie Stopes and Addis Ababa University were also partners of the project led by the ministry.
