SNV to Benefit 4,000 Women, Youth Farmers around Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa February 23/2021 (ENA) Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) in partnership with World Vegetable Center aims at improving vegetable productivity and benefiting 4,000 women and youth farmers around the capital, Addis Ababa.

Vegetables for Planet and People project that will run for 5 years around the big cities of Ethiopia and Kenya under a total finance of 6 million Euros was launched today.

Briefing journalists, World Vegetable Center Kenya Country Director Ralph Roothaert said the project is pivotal in minimizing food insecurity and improving nutrition.

He pointed out that it will increase the vegetable production value chain profit by 9 million Euros per year.

Residents of the big cities are not getting enough vegetable supplies, Roothaert said, and added that the project will increase the efficiency of supply for consumers.

According to the Country Director, the project will use regenerative technology to produce vegetables that are free from pesticide residue and simultaneously build trust among producers and consumers.

Furthermore, Roothaert pointed out that networks will be created to foster the benefit of participants.

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture pledged to replicate the good practices of the project which has immense role in averting food insecurity and maintaining healthy livelihood of citizens in other areas of the country.
