Ethiopian in Diaspora Supporting Reform

Addis Ababa June 27/2018 Ethiopian nationals and origin residing in Washington DC expressed their support to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who promotes love and reconciliation. Members of the Ethiopian Diaspora discussed steps taken in the political and economic area and changes brought in various areas since the Prime Minister took office in April. Several scholars known for their critic on the government in the past including Professor Alemayehu Gebrematiam have attended the discussion. During the discussion held in Washington in connection with the current reform in Ethiopia, the discussants said that they support the steps that have been taken and the change brought so far. Some discussants told ENA that the reform that has been seen over the past two months should be consolidated and the leadership needs to be supported. Prof Alemayehu said that the reform that Prime Minister Abiy is bringing to the country, which is based on love and reconciliation, should be sustained. Noting that the new Prime Minister is trying to bring change through love, he urged the need for everyone to seize the opportunity for the betterment of the people. Dr. Birehanemeskle Segni, another participant, said that Ethiopia need togetherness and unity more than anything.
“Unity is not similarity", Dr. Birehanemeskel said, adding that being united by strengthening the historic linkage between peoples is necessary to create economically, politically and technologically competitive society. To make this real, he advised on the need to follow the principle of love and togetherness, according to Dr. Birehanemeskel. Birehane Mewa, the former president of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and member of Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party’s international leadership of said standing with Prime Minister Abiy and supporting him is crucial to bring about the desired change. Noting that there was a problem in respecting the opinion of others, he urged the importance of nurturing the culture of understanding and respecting opinions and thought.
