Chairperson of SEPDM Resigned

Addis Ababa June 25/2018 Chairperson of the Southern Ethiopia Peoples Democratic Movement (SEPDM), Shiferaw Shigute has resigned from his post. Shiferaw told the media that his recognition has already accepted by the party. The ethnic based conflicts that occurred in parts of SNNP state, where SEPDM is administering is the main cause for his resignation, Shiferaw said. Shiferaw said “I don’t think it is proper for me to continue with such situation”, as the conflicts are the result of a gap in leadership. According to Shiferaw, his decision is also related to his belief that new faces have to come to the leadership in order to properly manage the ongoing change. He said “This [the need for new leadership] is the desire of our leadership, our members and the youth and I believe it should be respected”. Shiferaw, who has served as member of the EPRDF Executive Committee for 16 years, has been elected as chairperson of SEPDM recently. SEPDM is among the four parties that make up the ruling coalition – the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front.
