Commission Launches Six-Year Plan of Action for Job Creation

Addis Ababa  October  31  /2019 The Job Creation Commission of Ethiopia has unveiled its plan of action for the years 2020 to 2025 today. 

The plan of action is a holistic intervention designed to solve the employment challenges and provide a new vision of employment in Ethiopia.

Besides the government's aggressive effort in creating employment in identified sectors such as  manufacturing, the plan of action recognizes the previously unrecognized areas like music, fashion, photography, and fine arts.

The plan of action stated that job creation remained highly unorganized and suffered from structural problems even if over 617,320 jobs were created in 2018.

The Job Creation Commission envisions creating 886,818 jobs annually by in 2025 by re-invigorating strategies that enhance the activity.

Speaking at the opening of the Jobs Summit, Deputy Prime Minister and National Job Creation Council Chairperson Demeke Mekonnen said creating job opportunity is centerpiece of the major economic reform program of the government.

The government will revisit the job creation potentials in the country, specially for small and medium enterprises, in a manner that will enhance the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, he added.

According to him, the plan of action includes major areas that can improve job opportunities for the youth.

Job Creation Commissioner, Ephrem Tekle Lemango said the plan for job creation represents a milestone in the government’s drive to meet head-on challenges of unemployment and job creation in Ethiopia.

He added that the unrecognized creative arts of the country will be the main focuses on the plan of action.

“The plan, among others, commits us to concentrate actions and interventions for development of the private sector and to realize their full potential in the economic growth,” the commissioner stated.

Today’s high-level forum provided a platform at which over 450 keys stakeholders from private and pubic sectors as well as development partners deliberated on new approaches to meet Ethiopia’s unemployment and job creation challenges.

The Jobs Summit launched today is the first-ever national summit held to create a platform for stakeholders to discuss the job creation agenda and its implications.
