HPR Lifts State of Emergency

Addis Ababa June 05/2018 In its 29th regular session, the House of Peoples' Representatives (HPR) has passed the draft bill forwarded by the Council of Ministers to lift the State of Emergency. The House voted to approve lifting of the proclamation almost unanimously with only in 8 abstentions. Ethiopia has declared the State of Emergency for six months in February 16, 2018, but lifted after four months of emergency rule. The early end of the emergency rule is following peace and stability has been restored and the threat posed against the constitutional order has been quelled providing safety and security for citizens. Members of the parliament urged the regional administrators to work towards further on ensuring peace and stability in their respective regions by discussing with citizens to ascertain sustained peace, which is vital for the continuous development of the country. The MPs said lifting the state of emergency is instrumental for building a democratic political order in the country. The Council of Ministers regulation to implement the state of emergency and the consequent directives issued by the state of emergency command post is hereby repealed and inapplicable. Meanwhile, the House has also approved a draft bill for the agreement on the employment of domestic workers entered between the government of Ethiopian and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed on the 25th day of May 2017, in Jeddah. The House also discussed on draft procedures and modalities of providing clemency to prisoners and referred it to the concerned standing committee of the HPR.
