Addis Ababa /ENA/ July  29/2019 Charity service needs to evolve into well-managed programs in order to ascertain sustainable outputs and tackle the socioeconomic challenges the county is facing, a respected Ethiopian philanthropist said.

According to Mary Joy Development Association Executive Director, Sister Zebider Zewdie,   said charitable organizations, following the promulgation of the new Charity and Civil Society law, have become more enthusiastic in delivering services.

Appreciating the increasing interest of the various charities, she said they have to exert maximum effort to satisfy the growing demand in the country.

The  number  of homeless elders and street children is increasing, Zebider said, adding that “we have to create awareness among charity organizations to increase the level and quality of  services and engage in scaling up collaborative actions to restore Ethiopia's honor to its original level.”

Most of the socio-economic issues of the nation could be resolved, if all Ethiopians extend support to their fellow needy countrymen, she pointed out.

Ethiopia has recently amended its widely criticized charities and society law that placed excessive restrictions on the work of human rights organizations.

Praising the recent initiatives undertaken by the government, Zebider said one of the critical issues should be on how to manage the reviving desire of charitable organizations in a sustainable manner.

The government has huge responsibilities on setting directions and working with humanitarian and charity organizations to manage such desires and charitable services in a sustainable manner, she noted.

Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund Chairperson  Zafu Eyesuswork said charity is not new to  Ethiopia..

He criticized the recent odd trends that have been witnessed against the tradition and values of the country, following the spread of globalization which encourages boundless selfishness.

The chairperson added that this “ is a critical time to think and rethink on what is going on in our country against our own values, and respect our assets in hand.”
