Ethiopia’s President Urges Diplomats to Advocate National Interests

Addis Ababa January 19/2019 President Sahlework Zewde urged the diplomats who represent Ethiopia abroad to promote the interests of the country with a new sprit and dedication.

The President made the remark during a reception at the national palace last night for Ethiopian diplomats from across the world and newly appointed ones.

The President urged the diplomats to harmonize themselves with the circumstances as the global politics and diplomacy have become enormously complex.

“The contemporary work of diplomacy doesn’t have room for traditional diplomats and representations,” she underscored.

Noting that the country is in a series of reforms that will help to transform it, she urged them to advocate Ethiopia’s profile in the eyes of the international community.

Noting that Ethiopia has played vital diplomatic role in the United Nations and in many regional and continental issues, she urged them to work hard to sustain this role. “Our diplomatic role couldn’t be underestimated in those critical organizations like IGAD, AU and UN.”

The President said it is important to properly follow the country’s foreign policy directives that give top priority to economic diplomacy, regional integration and defend interest of its citizens living in the respective countries.

The President also expressed hope that the long serving and newly appointed diplomats tirelessly work to benefit their country. “Our ambassadors will tirelessly work to support and promote Ethiopia’s national interests abroad.”

The newly appointed ambassadors as well as diplomats who has been serving in different countries has been discussing the directives on Ethiopia’s foreign relations for five days.
